The Basics of Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpretation

NOW CONCLUDED

A workshop for bilingual (English/Spanish) Friends in the Section of the Americas
May 20–25, 2007 at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana

Deadline extended to April 20th
Limited to 20 participants

This workshop is offered for bilingual Friends who not only have the language skills but also who see interpretation among Friends as a ministry.  Interpretation—particularly simultaneous —is a special skill that has to be learned.  FWCC is increasingly aware of situations in meetings, yearly meetings and some Friends’ organizations where capable Spanish/English interpreters are needed.  FWCC itself has an ongoing need for skilled interpreters and translators.  Our hope is that Friends selected to participate will use their training in some of these settings, as a service to the Religious Society of Friends.

Vicki Hain Poorman, FWCC Bilingual Communications staff and Loida Fernández, Committee of Latin American Friends (COAL) Executive Secretary, will be the instructors. In addition to her staff duties, Vicki teaches the course Introduction to Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpretation at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. She holds a Master’s degree in Translation and Interpretation from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California. Loida has a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, is an experienced and highly qualified interpreter for FWCC and recently obtained additional training at Woodbrooke in the UK on Translating and Interpreting in a Quaker Context.

The training will focus on interpretation in a Quaker/religious context and include an introduction to and practice in sight translation, consecutive interpreting and note taking, and simultaneous interpreting, with resources provided for additional, independent study/practice.

To apply: complete the application, including the sample translation, and return to the FWCC office as soon as you can but no later than April 20, 2007.  Qualified applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Participants will be evaluated for language skills and service intentions.
